A pay and display car park machine was pulled out of the ground in Worcestershire and stolen.
About £1,000 was inside when it was taken from the Callow Hill Visitor Centre on the A456 at Bewdley overnight on Sunday.
Police say the machine, which belonged to the Forestry Commission and was worth more than £2,000, was later found in pieces at a quarry near Stourport.
Police want to know of anyone trying to change large quantities of coins.
Detectives are also appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious at the centre late on Sunday evening, to contact Kidderminster Police or Crimestoppers.
