The prisoner died in his cell at Blakenhurst Prison
An investigation has been launched into the death of an inmate found hanging in his cell at Blakenhurst Prison, near Redditch.

George Coates, 62, was found by staff on Sunday night, prison authorities said.

Mr Coates, who was from West Bromwich, had been serving a six-year sentence for wounding with intent and causing actual bodily harm.

Prison chiefs said an independent investigation into Mr Coates' death was now underway.

Mr Coates was not thought to be at risk and was not under suicide watch, the prison said.

West Mercia Police and the coroner have been informed of the death.
