Workmen 'destroy' bat roost site
Bat generic
The bats are protected by a special licence
Police in Nottinghamshire are investigating the alleged destruction of a bat roost.

Officers were called in by wildlife experts after reports workmen damaged the roost at Clifton Hall to make way for two luxury executive homes.

It put them in breach of a special licence granted by the Department for Food and Rural Affairs, preventing the bats from being evicted until October.

Nottinghamshire police's wildlife officer is investigating the incident.

An architect with the developers said they have taken steps to help the creatures, by building two alternative bat houses and hiring a conservation expert to oversee the process.
