Footballer faces driving charges

Fabrice Fernandes was stopped by police officers in central London
A Premiership footballer accused of driving through red lights while drunk has appeared in court.

Southampton winger Fabrice Fernandes, 24, was driving a Porsche when he was spotted by police going through a red light on High Holborn, London.

The player, of Pacific Close, Southampton, is accused of driving with excess alcohol, dangerous driving and failing to stop for a constable.

Bow Street Magistrates' Court granted the player bail to return on 29 June.

The player was stopped at about 0400 BST on 10 May in central London.

The Frenchman recently signed a new contract to keep him at Southampton until the end of the 2005-06 season.
