More retained firefighters needed in Newbury

A Berkshire fire station is appealing for more people to join the service as retained firefighters.

Newbury fire station needs more men and women who live within a mile or three minutes of the Hawthorn Road station.

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service is planning a recruitment event in June to try to recruit new retained staff.

The force said its firefighters must be active, practically minded, with good communication skills and enjoy working in a variety of roles.

Watch manager Phil Knight said: "Our job is not always about blue lights and sirens - it is also about putting something back into the community and working with a great bunch of people."

Retained firefighters are part-time firefighters who have jobs elsewhere and respond to emergency calls when needed.
