Portsmouth car park fight soldier dies in hospital

A soldier who suffered head injuries when he was attacked outside a Portsmouth pub has died in hospital.

Matt Brooks, 18, from Trowbridge, Wiltshire, was assaulted in a car park near Yates's bar on Thursday 13 May.

Dean Aldcroft, 21, of Warwick Crescent, Southsea, has been charged with two counts of assault and is due before Portsmouth Magistrates on Tuesday.

Hampshire police said Mr Brooks died during the night in the neurological unit of Southampton General Hospital.

The incident took place in Alec Rose Lane, behind Guildhall Walk, shortly before midnight.

Pte Matt Brooks served in the Army's Royal Logistics Corps and was enrolled on a course at HMS Sultan, in Gosport.

Ch Supt David Peacock offered his condolences to Pte Brooks' family.
