Thousands of homes in Ringwood without power

Thousands of homes were left without power in Hampshire earlier after workmen severed a high voltage underground cable.

Southern Electric said 2,844 homes were cut off in Ringwood at about 1050 BST although half were quickly restored by re-routing power supplies.

At 2100 BST about 600 customers were still without power.

The company said engineers were restoring supplies using mobile generators at sub stations.

The firm apologised to customers and said it was confident all supplies would be restored by 0200 BST.
