Calls for Damon Albarn to be fined for smoking

Action Smoking and Health (ASH) called for Mr Albarn to be fined

An anti-smoking charity has called for Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn to be prosecuted for smoking a cigarette on stage on the first night of a tour.

It was claimed the former Blur singer and his bandmate Paul Simonon lit up on stage at the Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth on Sunday.

A Wedgewood Rooms staff member said they had not been made aware of the smoking or received any complaints.

But Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) said the pair "should be fined".

ASH spokeswoman Amanda Sandford said: "There can be no excuse for that as it is an indoor place and the law is very clear.

"We are not allowed to smoke on stage unless it is relevant to the act.

"It is not just illegal but more importantly it is about the message it sends out to fans."

Gorillaz are officially a virtual band created made up of four animated characters - 2D, Murdoch, Noodle and Russel - created by Albarn and Tank Girl co-creator Jamie Hewlett.

But when they appear live in concert, the performance consists of a mix of animation and live music played by a band led by Albarn.
