The crew was treated for burns and the effects of inhaling smoke

Two men in their 60s were rescued from a burning boat off Calshot Spit in the Solent after it caught fire.

Coastguards were called at about 1315 GMT on Monday after an engine fire developed in the brand new motor cruiser, which had not yet been named.

The two men, from Rye, Sussex, were taken to hospital suffering from burns and the effects of breathing in smoke.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesman said the part of the boat above the waterline was burnt down.

The two-man crew had just taken delivery of the brand new 38ft (11m) Meridian motorboat and were on their way home when the fire broke out.

Both men managed to abandon the burning boat and get into their life raft before being rescued by a crew from RNLI Calshot.

The two men were then taken to Southampton General Hospital.
