A new £380m natural gas-fired power station near Southampton will be officially opened on Thursday.

The new facility at Marchwood has been operating since December supplying Southampton, Winchester and the New Forest with power.

Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE), which has a 50% stake in the site, said it could generate enough electricity to supply around one million homes.

The station is next to Southampton Water on Marchwood Industrial Estate.
