Gale force winds report on island

High tides in Emsworth
The Environment Agency has forecast high tides

A lighthouse on the most westerly point of the Isle of Wight has reported gusts of wind of between 95 and 100mph.

The news of strong winds at The Needles comes after the Environment Agency issued 13 flood warnings for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Hampshire Police has also warned people to stay away from the coastline because of the high tides forecast.

Areas at risk include Lymington, where the floodgates were shut, and Emsworth, which has temporary flood barriers.

Hampshire Constabulary said winds were expected to be reach between 70 and 80mph.

A spokeswoman said: "It is possible that heavy tree branches, roofing tiles and unstable chimney stacks could be dislodged.

"In addition, because of water-logged ground, trees may be uprooted by the heavy winds.

"There have not been any major problems across the two counties overnight."
