Murder probe into woman's death

Police cordon at the scene
Forensic officers were carrying out an investigation at the scene

A murder investigation has begun after a woman was found dead at her home in Southampton.

The woman, in her 40s, was found in Richville Road, Shirley, just before 0900 GMT, along with an injured man.

He was taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment and will be interviewed by detectives when medically fit, a police spokesman said.

A post-mortem examination to establish the cause of the woman's death is expected to be carried out on Monday.

Police were called at 0850 GMT after being alerted by a member of the public.

Crews from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service were also called to the scene by police in an "advisory" capacity after hazardous materials were discovered inside the property.

Det Insp Dave Dilly, who is leading the investigation, said: "Early indications suggest that this incident does not involve anyone else other than those mentioned and members of the public should therefore not be concerned.

"We are however keeping an open mind until we have spoken to the man."

Forensic officers were carrying out an investigation at the scene, which has been cordoned off.
