A campaign group said releasing the picture was "justified"

Campaigners for a lower speed limit in the New Forest have released a graphic image of a dead pony trying to be roused by its foal. The mare had its back broken when it was hit by a car near Brockenhurst. Landowners claim road accidents are killing three animals every two weeks. The South Weirs Action Group for Safety (Swags) want the 40mph limit reduced to 30mph across the whole forest. Hampshire County Council have agreed to investigate the issues raised. 'New signs' There are about 3,000 ponies in the forest. They are owned by landowners who have the right to allow their animals to roam. Swags say they have seen 40 similar incidents on the same stretch of road in the last five years. Jean Smith, from the group, said: "There is so much literature out about these incidents but to see something emotive as that really brings it home.
The orphaned foal has been named Nutmeg and is being looked after

"I think it is really justified...this is what happens. "People have to realise if they knock ponies down that is the end result." Nigel Matthews, from the New Forest National Park Authority, said: "We are working with the highways authority to come up with some new signs. "They will be quite simple but will change every three or four months. "Maybe a different message, like 'foals on the road' as it is now." The orphaned foal has been bought from its owner by the man who reported the original accident.
