Man arrested after climbing crane

A man was arrested after he climbed a 200ft (60m) crane outside a Hampshire hospital on Friday night.

Police officers were called by hospital staff after the 22-year-old clambered up the structure outside the A&E unit at Southampton General Hospital.

He spent an hour and a half walking around on top of the crane before coming down and being arrested.

Police negotiators and specialist public order officers were at the scene with firefighters and ambulance crews.

A Hampshire police spokesman said: "The man climbed a crane thought to be in the region of 200ft tall.

"(He) safely descended the crane at 8.34pm."

Police have not said what may have sparked the incident.
