The owner of a dog that attacked a New Forest pony and tried to attack a foal is being traced by police.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, which may be crossed with a Boxer, was seen hanging from the head of a pony in Beaulieu on Thursday afternoon.

A member of the public pulled the dog off the animal, but it then tried to attack a foal and chased ponies nearby.

Police said the attacked pony suffered "superficial" neck injuries. Witnesses told them the dog was out of control.

The dog was then driven away by a woman in a small, navy blue car.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened near the Beaulieu Road Hotel, Beaulieu Road.

The dog is described as being a mid and dark brown flecked colour.

The woman is described as 25 to 30 years old, slim, with dark hair in a pony tail.

She was wearing a blue top and three-quarter length trousers.
