Cowes Week sails without sponsor

Sailing enthusiasts keep coming as firms stay away

The Cowes Week sailing regatta is set to go ahead without a sponsor after intensive efforts by the organisers failed to find a financial backer.

The event has been without sponsorship since its 14-year deal with Skandia ended last year.

Stuart Quarrie, chief executive of Cowes Week Ltd, said: "We will have some sponsorship and it depends on what level we have it."

The regatta in August draws crowds of about 100,000 to the Isle of Wight.

Cowes Week Ltd has been in discussions with a number of potential sponsors, but has been unable to secure a firm deal for this year.
