More walkouts in refinery protest

Workers have gone on strike across the UK in support of the original protest

About 560 contract workers in Hampshire are on strike in support of protests over the use of foreign workers.

More than 400 employees walked out of the Esso refinery in Fawley on Monday.

Action is continuing at the Marchwood Power Station where about 140 contract workers downed tools on Friday with 160 not coming in this morning.

The original strike started at Lindsey Oil Refinery in Lincolnshire after owner Total gave a 200m contract to an Italian firm.

Marchwood Power Station has been under construction for two years and is expected to be completed by the end of the summer.

It employs a total of about 800 workers, of which 65% are British or Irish nationals.

A power station spokesman said: "There is still no indication of when this action will end.

"We can confirm 160 workers are taking action."

The Fawley site is one of the UK's largest oil refineries and processes about 300,000 barrels of crude oil a day.

It supplies about 13% of all petroleum products in the UK and has about 1,600 workers.

A Fawley spokesman said: "We can confirm that contractors employed by Deborah Services Ltd, TEi, Capes and SEC based at the ExxonMobil Fawley site have decided to participate in unofficial industrial action.

"There is no dispute with ExxonMobil.

"ExxonMobil management would like to stress that this action does not affect the safe operation of the Fawley site."

About 1,300 contract workers at the Sellafield nuclear site in Cumbria also walked out on Monday.
