Pellets shot at emergency crews

A paramedic and ambulance crew were shot at with plastic pellets while they were treating a patient.

Crews were called at 1153 GMT to Watts Road, Portsmouth, Hampshire, where a man had fallen from a lorry.

The paramedic first on the scene was shot at and was "fortunately" wearing his motorcycle helmet, but the shooting continued when colleagues arrived.

South Central Ambulance Service NHS Trust said it was "disgusted" by the attack and was helping police.

'Totally unacceptable'

Neil Cook, head of operations, said: "We are appalled at this incident today and are relieved to hear that no-one was injured in this attack.

"Ambulance staff are called to attend to people when they are in need, and violence of this nature is totally unacceptable and we will work with our police colleagues to find the perpetrators."

Ambulance staff continued to treat their patient and he was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses to the incident have been urged to contact police.
