A 19-year-old cyclist found unconscious at the side of a road in Portsmouth has died in hospital.

The man was discovered in the street at the junction of Shearer Road and Hampshire Street in Buckland just after 0300 GMT.

Ambulance crews treated him and he was then taken to the city's Queen Alexandra Hospital where he later died.

Investigating officers have been trying to establish what happened and have appealed for witnesses.

Detectives would not speculate about a possible hit-and-run collision but said they were exploring all lines of inquiry.

A cordon has been placed around the scene and the road was closed.
