Second man is charged with murder

A second person has been charged with the murder of a man who was beaten to death while trying to stop a fight.

Brett Carpenter, 36, was attacked in Highfield Road, Fratton, Portsmouth in Hampshire, on Tuesday.

Danny Bevan, 37, of Highfield Road in the city, was arrested on Sunday and is due to appear before Portsmouth Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Lee Bevan, 34, from London Road, Portsmouth, was earlier charged with murder and remains in custody.

A 29-year-old man from Guildford, who was detained on Sunday on suspicion of assisting an offender, was later released on bail until January.

A 32-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of murder was released without charge, while a woman, aged 35, has been released on bail.

A 38-year-old man held on suspicion of murder has also been bailed.

Post-mortem tests showed Mr Carpenter died of extensive head injuries.
