Man charged with beating murder

A man has been charged with murdering another man beaten to death when he tried to stop a fight in Hampshire.

Brett Carpenter, 36, was attacked when he tried to intervene in a dispute in Highfield Road, Fratton, Portsmouth on Tuesday at about 2000 GMT, police said.

Post-mortem tests showed he died of extensive head injuries.

Lee Bevan, a 34-year-old from London Road, Portsmouth, was charged with his murder. He is due to appear in Portsmouth Magistrates Court on Monday.

Mr Bevan was the fourth person from the city arrested over the death.

A 32-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of murder has been released without charge.

A woman, 35, held on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released on bail.

A 38-year-old man held on suspicion of murder has also been bailed.
