Parts of Hampshire woke to a covering of snow as freezing temperatures and a widespread frost hit the area.

The north of the county saw most of the snowfall, which is expected to clear up during Wednesday morning.

Forecasters said the unseasonal chill will continue for the rest of the day but it should stay dry.

Tom Tobler, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, said temperatures would remain low for the next couple of days, but the worst was probably past.

He said: "Later in the weekend, maybe into next week, temperatures might return more towards average, but we haven't got anything looking like warm weather."

The AA has also warned drivers to watch out for icy roads.

The cold snap is caused by cold air that has come down from the Arctic.

BBC Weather forecaster Kirsty McCabe said: "It is unusual weather and the air is much colder for this time of the year.

"It will be cold during the rest of the week and the temperature now is more like what you find at the end of December."
