A man's body has been found near a burnt-out car in Hampshire.

Firefighters were called during the early hours to reports of a burning Rover in a layby on the A31 in Alton between Upper Froyle and Gid Lane.

Police said they were making inquiries to identify the man. A post-mortem examination will be held later.

Det Supt Tony Harris, of Hampshire Police, appealed to anyone who may be concerned about the whereabouts of a man with a Rover car.

One lane of the A31 has been closed around the scene although there has been no reports of travel disruption.

Mr Harris said: "We are making inquiries to try and identify the man and the vehicle involved.

"We would be particularly interested in information from anyone who knows a man who owns a Rover vehicle and has concerns as to where he may be at the moment."
