A roe deer which became trapped in railings has been rescued by firefighters in Hampshire.

The animal suffered grazes to her body as she struggled to break free from the railings outside a property in Jersey Close, Basingstoke, on Sunday.

Fire crews put a sleeping bag over the deer's head to calm her down before using a special scissor jack to prise the bars open.

The animal was treated by the RSPCA and released back into the wild.

Watch manager Anton Phillips said: "It appears that someone was out walking when they came across the deer and dialled 999.

"We arrived to find the animal struggling, but trapped by the hips and therefore unable to get out of the gap.

"We placed a sleeping bag over her head to calm her down then used a scissor jack to open the bars and release the animal.

"It was a really good outcome for this particular animal."

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service has a team of four Animal Rescue Officers who come from farming or rural backgrounds.

Last year the officers attended 260 rescues.
