Man's body found on M3 junction

A man's body has been discovered at junction nine of the M3 in Hampshire.

The body was found on the carriageway at the top of the slip road from the M3 northbound onto the Winnall roundabout in Winchester on Wednesday morning.

The dead man was in his 50s or 60s with balding grey hair and was wearing a light brown anorak and brown trousers.

A pathologist will attend the scene - cordoned off as the investigation gets under way. The slip road will be closed until the rush-hour, police said.

The road into Winnall off junction nine is also closed up to the roundabout at Tesco.

A police spokesman said: "Drivers on the M3 northbound who wish to access the A34 are being advised to continue northbound on the M3 to junction seven where they can turn around and access junction nine southbound."

Ch Insp Roy Bayntun, from Hampshire Police, said: "It's not clear at this stage how this man's body came to be on the carriageway and we are keeping an open mind into the causes.

"The area around the Winnall roundabout and junction nine of the M3 would have been very busy at that time of the morning and I am appealing for anyone who may have seen what happened to contact me.

"It might be that that traffic has since left the area continuing their journey on the M3 or A34.

"I am also keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a man fitting the description of the deceased crossing the carriageway at this time."
