Up to 800 workers completed the engineering work over 10 days

Commuters have returned to their usual means of travel after repair work closed rail lines for 10 days in the biggest upheaval for 40 years.

Delays of up to an hour hit rail users from the South West, Wiltshire and Berkshire as they were diverted away from £130m works around Basingstoke.

Up to a third of workers stayed at home to avoid delays after the Easter break.

Network Rail said the engineering work finished on schedule, with normal timetables resuming in the early hours.

More than 90 buses replaced trains that normally ran through Basingstoke, as up to 800 track workers put in place the changes to tracks and signalling.

Mark Somers, of Network Rail, said: "It's a once in 40 years renewal, we won't be back here for another 40 years or longer."
