Isle of Wight set for 2011 games
The Isle of Wight has won its bid to host the 2011 Island Games after fighting off competition from Bermuda in the final round.

The decision was made at the Island Games Association's annual general meeting in Rhodes on Saturday.

More than 3,000 athletes are expected to participate in the event, which will take place in June and July 2011.

Councillor Andy Sutton, leader of the council, said £500,000 of council cash had been allocated to the event.

He said: "We can now look forward to a return on this investment for the island's economy, supporting our local regeneration and welcoming international sportsmen and women.

"The games will make the island a focus in the run up to London 2012, providing many opportunities for local children and young people to achieve sporting excellence."
