Emergency collapsed sewer repair

The company has begun a £523m upgrade of the sewage system
A water firm recently named as the South's worst polluter is to carry out emergency repairs on a collapsed sewer.

From Monday, South Street in Newport on the Isle of Wight, will be closed for a three-week period for an urgent upgrade, said Southern Water.

Traffic will be diverted with a number of roads affected, including Town Lane and Pyle Street, where some work will also be undertaken, added the company.

Repairs will be carried out at Pyle Street and St James Square's junction.

Southern Water was named by the Environment Agency in July as the most frequently prosecuted and highest fined water company in its southern region.

The company, which takes dirty water from two million South-East homes, has now said a £523m sewage upgrade is under way to cut the number of incidents.
