Work starts this week to demolish a former shopping centre at Gloucester docks to make way for new flats and commercial units.

The 1980s Merchants Quay centre, which has been empty for 18 months, will be revamped by developer Crest Nicholson.

The new warehouse-style building will house 48 flats with leisure and retail units at ground level.

The scheme is part of a multi-million pound regeneration programme of the docks area.

Antonia Shield, from the Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company (GHURC), said: "It is extremely exciting that this scheme is now being started at such an economically challenging time for the country.

"This is clear evidence of the strength of confidence that outside and private investors have in the city of Gloucester."
