Spotlight thrown on city monument

St Oswald's Priory
The historic priory in Gloucester dates back to 890 AD

St Oswald's Priory in Gloucester is to be floodlit as part of a project to light up historic buildings.

Fourteen lights will highlight key features of the monument which dates back to 890 AD.

The Guildhall has already been lit and plans are in place to floodlight the cathedral and Bishop Hooper's monument.

Gloucester City Council Leader, Paul James, said: "They will add greatly to the ambiance of Gloucester and help show up our heritage after dark."

The lights will be formally switched on at 1800 GMT.

"St Oswald's Priory has already won a number of awards for the work done on its restoration," said Mr James.

"This scheme also completes the final piece of regeneration work in this area - which is a key walking route into the city."
