School struck by 'flu-like' bug

Some pupils at an independent school in Cheltenham have been struck-down with a flu-like bug, believed to have affected 25% of the children.

Dean Close School has confirmed on its website that the illness is causing serious disruption.

The school is emphasising that none of the students have contracted swine flu, but sports fixtures and school trips have been cancelled as a precaution.

Dean Close School has pupils aged between two and 18.

It was established in 1886 and is set in 50 acres of parkland in the centre of Cheltenham.

In a statement on the schools's website it said it had been advised those exhibiting symptoms remain contagious for five days.

"We would ask that you bear this in mind when deciding when your son or daughter is ready to return to school.

"It is our intention to continue to operate as a school whilst seeking to provide the best care for our pupils and staff."
