Emergency ambulance in road crash

An ambulance travelling under blue lights has collided with a car in Gloucester.

The emergency vehicle was carrying a patient to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital when the crash happened at 0820 GMT on the A48 at Minsterworth.

The patient being carried was not injured and was taken by another ambulance to hospital for treatment.

The female driver of the car had to be cut free but is not thought to have suffered serious injuries.

One member of the ambulance crew was also treated for a minor head injury.

Jonathan Lofthouse, of the Great Western Ambulance Service, said: "Clearly our prime concern is for the welfare of the patients, including our own member of staff.

"The incident is now the subject of a police inquiry, which is normal when a blue-light service is involved."
