Recession hits cathedral profits

Gloucester cathedral
Worship has taken place in the building for 900 years

Financial figures due to be released on Monday will show Gloucester Cathedral has made a financial loss for the first time in nine years.

The medieval cathedral's annual report shows it ended the last financial year with a £28,000 deficit, despite good income from a Harry Potter film.

The cloisters were used as a set for the film. Managers said the deficit was proof of the ongoing recession.

Christian worship has taken place at the cathedral for 900 years.

English Heritage contributed £32,000 towards the £100,000 cost of a restoration project on the building in 2007.
