Children in care figure 'up 20%'

The number of children in care in Gloucestershire in the past year has increased by 20%, according to the county council.

It claims this is down to a combination of the recession and the fallout from the Baby Peter case in London.

"It's made childcare professionals a lot more aware of the risks," said Gloucestershire councillor Paul McLean.

Children's services are dealing with 480 cases at any one time, compared to the usual number of 400, he said.

Mr McLean, cabinet member for children and young people, added: "We're seeing a lot more referrals from police child protection workers, health visitors, GPs and members of the public.

"It's an awful thing to say but every time there is a recession we do see more children being more vulnerable and more family break-ups."
