Police in Cheltenham have been granted a dispersal order for the town centre in an attempt to curb anti-social behaviour.
The order gives police the authority to break-up and move on large groups officers believe have the potential to cause trouble.
A Cheltenham Borough Council spokesman said the order would be used as part of a package of measures.
"It is a small minority of people spoiling it for everyone," he said.
"The dispersal order will not be used in isolation, but will form part of our integrated response to tackling crime and disorder.
"Dispersal orders are proven ways of tackling unwanted behaviour and have been successful in other areas of the borough."
The order runs from 22 May until 22 November 2009.
