A40 re-opened after month's delay

Delayed road works on the A40 in Gloucestershire have been completed and the road has re-opened to motorists.

The £10m project to improve the A40 between Highnam and Over was supposed to be finished a month ago but was delayed due to machinery problems.

Two lanes have opened in each direction but some traffic lights will not be operational until later in the week.

The Highways Agency blamed poor weather and the complexity of the project for the delays.

Stan Waddington, of Gloucestershire County Council, said: "I think that our main concern is that the Highway's Agency could have helped us a lot more with managing traffic than they have done.

"The completion time that they promised came and went and I'm still concerned it's not going to be fully open."

Mr Waddington said the authority had just completed a £5m project in Cheltenham on the A40 five weeks ahead of schedule."
