The family and friends of a surveyor killed when he was buried under tonnes of mud when a trench collapsed have paid tribute to him.

Soil engineer Alex Wright was working taking samples in Stroud last Friday when the accident - caused by torrential rain - happened.

His family said the 27-year-old was "hard-working" and "very giving of his time".

Girlfriend Maz Duijm said: "He was a lovely and very special man."

His father Joseph Wright added: "He was really family-orientated and couldn't do enough for his family and those around him."

Alex Wright, who had worked for Cotswold Geotech Ltd as a soil engineer for more than two years, was also an assistant scout leader with the Charlton Kings Scout Troop.

He graduated from Imperial College London in 2002.
