Play area for flood-hit suburb

Thousands of homes and roads were flooded in 2007

A new play area is due to be opened on Sunday in an area of a city which was badly hit by the floods of 2007.

Play equipment has been installed at Paygrove Lane at Longlevens in Gloucester.

The play area borders the Cypress Gardens estate and Park Avenue, both of which had homes flooded.

City mayor Norman Ravenhill will cut the ribbon to open the play area on Sunday at 1430 BST. A party will also be held for flood-hit residents.

City council leader Paul James said: "I'm delighted we have been able to get this play area replaced.

"It was in a very poor condition and, until the grants were awarded, we had no funding identified to carry out any works. I am grateful to the Rotary Club and Severn Trent for their generosity."

The area is funded by grants of £36,000 from local Rotarians and £40,000 from Severn Trent.
