Cross border fly-tippers warned

Flytipping in Stroud lay-by
Clues in the rubbish led officers to Gloucester city centre

Residents and traders in Gloucester are being warned against fly-tipping their rubbish in neighbouring Stroud.

A number of lay-bys and open spaces bordering the two areas have been used as dumping grounds, according to Stroud District Council officers.

A search of the rubbish led them to believe it had come from Gloucester city centre.

The City Council said it could not comment because no formal approach had been made by the authority.

Stroud District Council officers have visited a number of shops and businesses in Gloucester in the wake of the fly-tipping incidents.

Colin Peake, anti-social behaviour coordinator, said: "It is fairly obvious that individuals or someone collecting rubbish from shops and similar places, may well be avoiding a payment to dispose of trade waste or items of polluted waste, like old tyres."

Anyone involved in illegal disposal faced prosecution and the severe penalties, he said.

Carlos Novoth, head of public spaces with Stroud District Council, said having people from other areas dumping rubbish "would not be tolerated".
