Cake poison woman pleads guilty

A former hospital cook admitted baking a fruitcake with rat poison for her husband, after discovering he was having an affair.

Yvonne Godwin, 56, of Pilley Crescent, Cheltenham, put two teaspoons of the substance into the cake she made for her partner of 30 years, Robert Godwin.

She pleaded guilty to attempting to administer poison with intent to injure, aggravate or annoy.

The judge ordered pre-sentence and psychiatric reports on Godwin.

She was remanded until 28 May for sentencing.

Mrs Godwin admitted lacing the cake on a date between 22 February and 11 March 2008, and her guilty plea was accepted by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Gloucester Crown Court was told that a slice had been analysed by forensic experts who had found that nine grams of poison were inside.

It would take 1,500 grams to kill a man.

But scientists looking at the cake found that blobs of the green poison, which can cause internal bleeding, were clearly visible.

Judge Martin Picton said: "It doesn't look overly appetising, it has to be said."

At an earlier hearing magistrates were told Godwin had used the poison because her husband was having an affair and she wanted to 'do him in'.
