The service has double the average number of female firefighters
Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service has been praised for the diversity of its workforce.

The Audit Commission said the county's percentage of female firefighters was more than double the national average. Many women also held senior positions.

The service also performed well in its recruitment of disabled staff.

Chief Fire Officer Terry Standing said; "Having a diverse workforce ensures we understand the needs and differences of the community we serve."

He added: "We have worked extremely hard in improving our make up but we still have a long way to go.

Recruitment drives

"I am pleased that the Audit Commission has recognised our efforts.

"Part of our success is due to the innovative way we've gone about recruiting new members of staff and showing that a career in the fire service is open to all."

The service has set out to target under-represented groups by appearing at careers fairs, clubs and community events.

It has also held "have a go" sessions, where people from all backgrounds were able to find out about the job.

Councillor Will Windsor Clive said: "With 51% of residents of Gloucestershire women, and around 3% from a black or minority ethnic background, the fire and rescue service has a duty to represent the community it protects."
