Gravestones are tested for safety
Gravestones
Test will involve a combination of visual and physical checks
Safety checks are being carried out on tombstones and memorials in cemeteries in Cheltenham.

The tests at Bouncers Lane and Charlton Kings were advised by the Health and Safety Executive after a number of accidents in other parts of the UK.

Inspections will involve a combination of a visual check, a hand pressure test and use of an electronic device.

The council said it would make every attempt to contact next of kin if a memorial had failed the inspection.

'Sensitive issue'

Any memorial that has failed the safety test will be cordoned off or temporarily strapped to a wooden post in order to make it safe.

If the headstone is in immediate danger of collapse, it will be carefully laid flat within the grave space.

Families will be asked to make repairs within 12 months.

Garry Bowles, cemetery manager, said: ''I appreciate that this is a sensitive issue as memorials are a lasting tribute to loved ones.

"We are however committed to ensuring that our cemeteries are a safe place for visitors, staff and contractors. We will do everything we can to offer help and advice during this time.''
