Harriet the cow put down by vet

Mark Harper MP had backed the campaign to save Harriet
The cow at the centre of an argument between the government and her owners from the Forest of Dean has died.

It is thought Harriet the cow once shared food with a cow suffering from BSE, since then the government has battled to have her put down.

Her owners had argued she was a pet and took the case to the High Court to try to get peers to override EU law.

Harriet was put down by the vet because she was ill but the owners legal battle remains unresolved.

Local Tory MP Mark Harper had backed the campaign to save the cow on behalf of owner David Price.

He said: "This is obviously very sad news for the Price family.

"At least they were able to be in control of events at the end rather than a repeat of a distressing experience at the hands of Defra."
