Prince intervenes in arch debate
Prince Charles
Prince Charles wants the decision to be postponed
Prince Charles has entered a long- running debate over the future of a Norman arch in a Gloucestershire town.

The Grade I-listed arch is one of Cirencester's oldest buildings, dating back to the 12th century, but it needs around £70,000 of repairs.

It is owned by the town council, which is considering selling or leasing it.

Prince Charles has written to the mayor suggesting the arch's future is assessed as part of the 'Vision for Cirencester' town planning study.

A spokeswoman for Cotswold District Council said: "We very much welcome the Prince of Wales' interest in our Vision for Cirencester.

"We want to hear everyone's views - from school children to potential developers - and will be consulting people on how they see the future of Cirencester.

"The Norman Arch can, of course, be part of that debate although Cotswold District Council cannot control its future as it does not own the land in question."

A decision on the Arch is due to be made at a meeting of Cirencester Town Council next month.
