The Environment Agency has announced that it has awarded a permit for a hazardous waste landfill site at Bishop's Cleeve, Gloucestershire.
The site at Wingmoor Farm was picked because it sits on a bed of clay, which could help limit the spread of toxic material.
Grundon Waste Management, who will run the site, will have strict controls placed on them by the Agency.
The waste licence was opposed by many nearby residents.
Area Environment Manager, Stuart Baker, said: "If we were not satisfied that the site could not be operated safely we would not have issued the licence.
"The conditions we have imposed on Grundons are tough and designed to protect the community and the environment."
