The refurbished £5m Corinium Museum in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, opens to the public on Wednesday.
The two year makeover was funded partly by Cotswold District Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund. Cotswold Museum Charitable Trust also contributed.
Exhibitions in the museum will reflect Cirencester's heritage and the fact it was once the biggest Roman town outside London.
The museum has also been kitted out with new video screen displays.
The Head of Museum Services at Cotswold District Council said: "It's a unique attraction that we hope will be the source of enjoyment for everyone who visits.
"We are very grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund and all the private donors who helped the council to make this happen."
