Photographer jailed for sex attacks
Dean Coles

A glamour photographer who raped and indecently assaulted his model clients has been jailed for seven years.

The three-week trial of Dean Coles, 40, ended on Thursday when he was found guilty of two final counts of indecent assault.

A jury at Bristol Crown Court had earlier convicted him of one count of rape, one of attempted rape and one of indecent assault.

Coles, who ran the Cotswold Model Agency from his home in Rodborough, Gloucestershire, was cleared of another charge of rape and two of indecent assault.

Sexual favours

He was accused of preying on his clients during photo sessions, but had denied all the charges against him.

The court heard he bullied the women, requested sexual favours and fondled them.

Jailing Coles for seven years, Judge Tom Crowther said his sentence was to punish and deter offenders and to protect women.

He spoke of the vulnerability of the victims and told Coles: "You abused their trust in that situation to indulge your sexual desire."

He said that Coles was not predatory but an opportunist. On his release from jail Coles was ordered to sign the sex offenders' register.

After the verdicts were announced, a spokesman for Gloucestershire Police said Coles was suspected of carrying out a number of other assaults.

'Common rapist'

He said: "Coles tried to present his business as a reputable model agency but we believe the guilty verdicts show the reality of what went on.

"Some 53 other women also made allegations of sexual offences including rape, attempted rape and indecent asssault in this case, but for a variety of reasons - not least making the trial manageable - not all gave evidence. "

A statement released from one of Coles's victims criticised the delay in bringing him to justice.

She said: "It is hard for any person to report an assault of a sexual nature and to go through the stress and humiliation of a trial.

"However, the suffering is compounded when the perpetrator is able to use the criminal justice system to cause his victims further stress and disruption through the repeated postponement of the proceedings.

"As can be witnessed by his crimes, Coles was not the family man he was portrayed as, but a common rapist who conceivably posed a threat to members of the public."
