Elderly woman dies after mobility scooter seen in river

A 69-year-old woman whose mobility scooter was spotted in an Essex river has died after being pulled from the water.

Police were called on Friday night after the woman's vehicle was seen in the River Brain in Witham, near River Walk's junction with Guithavon Road.

Officers pulled the woman, who was from Witham, out and tried to resuscitate her but she was pronounced dead.

A formal identification is expected later.

A post mortem examination will be carried out next week.

A section of River Walk was closed for four hours while forensic collision investigators carried out their enquiries and the scooter was recovered.

Anyone who saw the woman travelling on her red disability scooter between 1800 and 1930 GMT on Friday is asked to contact Essex Police.
