Southend Pier closes for repairs

An Essex pier is being closed temporarily for long-awaited repair works to take place.

Southend Pier will be shut for five days from Monday so work on the walkway ramp can be carried out.

The pier and a pub, gift shop and restaurant on it were partially destroyed in a fire in October 2005.

During the closure the 1950s windbreaks will be reinstated, windows in the pier's museum replaced and large areas repainted.

Councillor John Lamb, of Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, said: "The repairs to refurbish and preserve our internationally iconic pier are proceeding well at the moment.

"It is inevitable that there will be a certain amount of disruption at particular stages of the work."

At 1.34 miles (2.16km), Southend Pier - opened in 1889 - is one of the longest pleasure piers in the world.
