'Vicious' iron bar attack on man

A 61-year-old man suffered serious injuries when he was beaten with an iron bar or cosh in Essex.

The local man left the Working Mens Club in Grays on Saturday night and was walking along London Road when he was attacked by three men.

He was struck around the face with the weapon and the attack continued while he was on the ground. The three men ran off when a woman shouted at them.

Police called the attack, which left the man with many injuries, "vicious".

The victim needed about 30 stitches for facial injuries and suffered a broken nose and concussion. He was treated at Basildon Hospital.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack, particularly a taxi driver who had a conversation with the man in Crown Road and the woman who shouted at the attackers.

The attackers are described as three white men, possibly of Eastern European origin.
